CRAFTING
THE SHADOW PRINT
GO INSIDE THE ATELIER WITH ARTIST AND TEXTILE DESIGNER LEILA DUBUS TO DISCOVER THE ARTISTRY OF THE PRE-FALL 2024 SHADOW PRINT.
Collaborating with Creative Director Emily Smith, Dubus tapped into the collection’s Marfa, Texas, source material to inform her approach: the traditional, camera-less photographic technique of cyanotype. “It seemed really perfect for the topic, working with the sun to tell the story about the desert,” says Dubus. Using branches Smith brought back from her personal travel to Marfa, Dubus harnessed the power of the sun to silhouette the abstract forms onto paper in artwork that was eventually transformed into the collection’s graphic motif. “I’m often looking at traditional craft techniques—like cyanotype—that wouldn’t seem so obvious for a luxury fashion house. We start from there and transform it, working with Lafayette 148 DNA and Emily’s vision to really modernize it match the standard of the brand. It’s a very creative and collaborative process.”
“Suddenly you rinse it in the water and it’s here. It’s not the same revelation when you’re painting or doing pastels—it’s like magic.”
