LAFAYETTE 148 PRESENTS FALL 2023, ‘IN THE LIBRARY OF WOMEN’, A COLLECTION INSPIRED BY THE ARCHITECTURE OF BROOKLYN PUBLIC LIBRARY’S CENTRAL BRANCH & THE RICH ARCHIVE OF STORIES BY FEMALE LITERARY ICONS HOUSED WITHIN.
Using fabrics from organza silk & bouclé woolen yarns, Creative Director Emily Smith & her design atelier have created relaxed garments that emulate the library’s sculptural spaces & light-filled autumnal palette. The books themselves are captured in bookbinding stitches, rich patinas evocative of vintage editions & silhouettes mirroring the movements of their pages. The resulting collection updates & feminizes classic Ivy League sartorial codes, while celebrating the lives of iconic American women authors—from Louisa May Alcott to Joan Didion—and reinterpreting the traditional writer’s uniform for today.
“I’ve long been fascinated by Brooklyn Public Library’s architectural evolution over the years, from its original Beaux-Arts grandeur to Toshiko Mori’s ongoing revamp of the Central Library spaces. The grace & refinement of her design really strikes a chord with our understated & sculptural approach to crafting Lafayette 148 collections.”
