Drawing from her personal travel to the region as well as Brooklyn-based photographer Martien Mulder’s rich portfolio of imagery shot in Marfa, Creative Director Emily Smith presents a versatile summerwear collection celebrating the desert’s tones and textures, sunlight and shadows, minimalist lines, mirage-like metallics and altogether unexpected magic of Marfa.

The raw expanse of landscape, deep sunsets over the Chinati Mountains & fields dotted with cacti are all subtly evoked in the collection’s hazy desert palette, while crinkled fabric textures conjure the sun-cracked concrete of the region’s iconic art foundation structures embedded in the desert terrain. A study of light & space abounds, paying homage to Marfa’s longstanding association with American minimalism through linear lines tracing the body’s contours, cube forms recalling the foundations’ artworks & graphic cyanotype prints reflecting the shadow lines of West Texas twigs against the scorched earth. Mirage illusions are mirrored through liquid-like fabrics & unexpected metallics, while the dry climate & sculptural qualities of cacti are recreated through craft-intensive fabrics & features. Finally, traditional workwear & tailoring archetypes are softened & lightened to merge feminine sophistication with the relaxed ease of dressing in the searing heat of the desert.

“Last summer, I finally traveled to Marfa & found a world of inspiration: the intensity of the sun, the shades of the horizon, the sculptural flora & the art foundations’ iconic concrete buildings within the desert landscape. I later came across Martien Mulder’s images of Marfa & recognized a kindred spirit in another who saw the beauty in the desolation of both the arid terrain & naturally weathered buildings. This shared vision was the starting point for the collection: a celebration of art & architecture, light & landscape, summer travel & the unexpected magic that is Marfa.”
