The Art of Escape

The Art of Escape

Each December, winter’s dawn draws us to warmer destinations. This year a mid-winter trip to the Magic City—Miami—served as Creative Director Emily Smith’s muse for a travel-ready capsule made for sunny escapes.

Crisp, clean lines and a palette of soft pastels echo the city’s Art Deco designs. Lightweight, layerable pieces are crafted to travel with now and live in long past Spring. And geometric motifs and painterly prints nod to this emerging art mecca, which lures artists from around the globe each December for its famed festival, Art Basel. Pack your bags and discover Miami, through our eyes.

Vibrant statement prints form an artful foundation for the collection, drawn from Emily Smith’s inspiration board of Art Deco posters and ceramics. Pattern mixing offers a fresh, modern twist to the motifs atop bomber jackets, dresses, pants and tops, all fashioned in the season’s most sophisticated travel fabric—ultra-lightweight Italian silk twill.

“There’s an ease and effortlessness to the Miami sensibility that’s so refreshing. The soft curves of the Deco era, the color of the sky and the refined simplicity of design all found their way into the collection.”

—Emily Smith, Creative Director

Sleek, precision-tailored silhouettes reflect Miami’s legendary Art Deco edifices. A blush suit blends fresh proportions, pick stitching and architectural lines. To balance the structure, Creative Director Emily Smith chose fabrics that blend refinement with ease and breathability—like this stunning mix of Italian linen, wool and silk.

Miami’s artistic legacy is rich and flourishing. During the heyday of the Art Deco movement in the ‘30s and ‘40s, South Beach enchanted the world and transformed architecture, with an explosion of fanciful buildings in ice cream colors. Over the last decade, Miami has grown into an international destination for artists and collectors, with dozens of galleries and world-class museums at the fore of the contemporary art scene. The Pérez Museum of Art Miami (PAMM) and Institute for Contemporary Art are among Creative Director Emily Smith’s favorite places to wander and get inspired when she’s in town for Art Basel, the city’s annual art fair.

Miami’s surroundings are reflected throughout the collection. In indulgently soft cashmere, cast in the colors of sand and sea. In a painterly palm print—developed exclusively for us by one of Italy’s most legendary print houses. And in gleaming metallic accents, which channel the curving steel details of the city’s Deco buildings. But Miami is just the beginning. Every piece is designed to evolve beyond travel dressing and make the transition to Spring easy and seamless.
